Description:
Abstract:
Selected major rivers were extracted from all rivers and streams in the USGS 1:2,000,000 Digital Line Graphs (DLG) dataset. The major rivers include the Copper, Susitna, Kuskokwim, Yukon, Koyukuk, Kobuk, Noatak, and Colville Rivers. Set these rivers to the hierarchy attribute to "1". To access the complete statewide DLG dataset, refer to the "Rivers, 1:2,000,000" metadata.
New to this coverage is a second hierarchical level of streams. These streams were pulled from the 1995 navigability coverage. This coverage, however, does not represent which streams are considered navigable by the state. The second hierarchy was added for cartographic purposes only - to provide a more complete river drainage layer on statewide maps.
Purpose:
The purpose of this coverage is to map the major streams without the burden of reselecting or mapping all other streams. Though the resolution is 1:2,000,000, it is ideal for general river reference for mapping 8.5" x 11" maps of the state; The user should reselect for hierarchy = "1" for this scale of mapping.
Supplemental_Information:
Procedures_Used: This coverage was updated for annotation purposes for the LDA maps in August & September 1992. The "Gulf of Alaska" anno was repositioned.
The origin of this coverage is USGS DLG data October 1990. The documentation notes from J. Tam indicate that the Copper--Noatak--and Colville Rivers were added in August 1991. J. Tam also created the ARC 6.0 anno subclass anno.times in July 1992. The notes indicate the anno subclass should be used with an DNR textset such as Annolevel 102 is for blue Palacio bold italic font.
Revisions: 2/23/98 D. Mortenson Renamed from majriv in Starter Kit or $HYDRO_ST in DNR working directories to rvr2milm. 2/26/98 - added the attribute hierarchy, and added a second level of streams selected from the 1995 navigable waters layer. This does NOT imply navigable waters as determined by the state. This edit work was done for cartographic purposes of the base map of Alaska.
These edits need to be made to HYDRO because MAJ = 0 and MIN = 0 indicate that the arcs were part of the original DLG "framework. SKR 10-24-92

To ensure distribution of the most current public information, please refer requests for data or products to the Alaska Department of Natural Resources, Land Records Information Section.
Use_Constraints:
It is not recommended the data be used at a scale larger than 1:2,000,000.
Any hardcopies utilizing these data sets shall clearly indicate their source. If the user has modified the data in any way they are obligated to describe the types of modifications they have performed on the hardcopy map. User specifically agrees not to misrepresent these data sets, nor to imply that changes they made were approved by Alaska Department of Natural Resources.
SPECIAL NOTE: Some of the information here was selected from the 1995 navigable waters layer. This layer was never a final dataset representing the navigable waters, and should not be used as a source for rivers considered navigable by the state.

Process_Description:
Added selected streams from the navskr or $nav_riv coverage. Deleted the centerline in water body streams. Added the code HIERARCHY. Those streams in the original version are coded "1", those added on 02/27/98 are coded "2". The purpose was to add more flexibility to the Major Rivers layer, and reduce the number of other coverages. It should be noted there is a more current (1997) navigability layer being developed by the Division of Land.
